A White House dinner to honor Iraq war veterans is no substitute for a national day when all Americans can welcome home returning troops, a veterans group said Tuesday.
?We certainly appreciate that the president is holding this dinner. At the same time, the rest of the American public really wants to do something to welcome home our vets and to support them going forward,? Jason Hansman, an Iraq vet and membership director of the Iraqi and Afghanistan Veterans Association, told msnbc.com.
An event some have called a state dinner for the troops is scheduled for Wednesday in the East Room of the White House.?Saying it the beginning of a "thank you,"?it will express the nation?s gratitude to American service members who served in the nine-year Iraq war, according to Douglas Wilson, the Pentagon's public affairs chief.
A hand-picked number of service members, veterans and their families will attend representing every state and territory, the District of Columbia as well as variety of ranks as well as all branches of the military.

The dinner, with an estimated 200 attendees, will include fewer than 80 combat veterans.

Among those attending the dinner is Eric Alva, a former Marine who became the first person wounded?in the Iraq war when he stepped on a landmine in Basra in 2003. His leg had to be amputated after the injury. He later went on to graduate from college and crusade against the ?don?t ask don?t tell policy? on gays in the military.
Alva was present when Obama repealed the ban on gays serving in the armed forces last year.
Since Obama announced last December the end to the war in Iraq in which 1.5 million Americans fought, there has been increased debate over how little fanfare has been afforded the returning troops.
Some grassroots organizers even took matters into their hands. A parade for returning veterans in St. Louis?last month drew some 100,000 people and 20,000 participants. Several other cities, including Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Seattle, Tucson, Ariz., Nashville, Tenn., Greensboro, N.C., and Clinton, Iowa have expressed interest in such a celebration.
Veterans groups and others want a ticker tape parade in New York City to honor returning vets. Military leaders, however, have said such a large scale national tribute was inappropriate considering nearly 90,000 U.S. troops are still fighting in Afghanistan.
Now the Iraqi and Afghanistan Veterans Association,?which has 140,000 members, is calling for a national day of action for veterans. The day would be both a celebration and an awareness campaign to help vets find jobs and connect them with other resources.
'Connecting' vets
??It?s not just about a day, it?s not just about a parade or an event or even a White House dinner,? said the IAVA's Hansman, who will attend the White House event. ?It?s about ultimately connecting vets with resources. We know that they?re struggling with employment, with suicide, and they?re going back to school in record numbers so it?s about connecting them with resources and helping them transition.?

Unemployment for post-9-11 veterans soared into double digits in recent years but dipped to 9.3 percent in December 2011. That?s still higher than the national jobless rate of 8.3 percent.
To be sure, the White House has made getting war veterans back to work a priority. Earlier this month, Obama announced measures to hire Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to restore national parks and work as police and firefighters. And Michelle Obama has worked to support military families by calling for changes to the Family and Medical Leave Act to protect jobs when service members are away or become injured.
Nearly 4,500 Americans were killed in Iraq, and more than 32,000 were wounded, according to the Pentagon.

Travelling With Friends And More Buildings In Prague | QUIPIDITY
The friend that I want to Prague with I have travelled with before. Several times, we have been to Peru, to Vietnam, to Cambodia, to Bruges and I have visited her in London several times. We used to walk home from work together but in 2007 she packed up and moved to London. I miss our walks home. When we met we were both in similar places in our lives. Both had left relationships that were no longer working. We both wanted to travel and were both trying to figure out what our next moves were. Turns out first on the list was Peru, still my favourite of all the trips I?ve done.
Travelling with a friend is a great experience and we are a team when we travel (TEAM SQUIRREL! long story). We know things about each other that we would not have learned any other way and we travel well together. No matter how easy going friends are and how similar their expectations of a trip there are there are always moments and times where one or the other gets snappy, moody or a disagreement happens.
Both of us get grumpy if we haven?t eaten. We have learned to air concerns right away and ?not let them build. We have learnt to communicate so that we understand why somebody might be acting a certain way. Like all relationships friendships take work but the reward is more than worth it. When a problem occurs, we deal with it and then drop it. Move on and focus on the task at hand and the adventures ahead. The problems are not what I will remember, although we?ve had our fair share. I will remember all the laughter, unexpected fun when things don?t go to plan, the shared experiences of seeing so many amazing places. Yes we have laughed, cried and yelled.
As travel buddies go she is the best. Easy going and adventurous. Knows what she likes to see and do but also takes my likes and interests into consideration. Also puts up with me when I?m grumpy, moody or turning into frustrated five year old. The majority of time it is an easy friendship full of laughter and joy.
Team Squirrel! I hope will have many more adventures.

Gov't seeks smaller role for Fannie, Freddie
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The government regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac has submitted a plan to Congress that would shrink the mortgage giants' role in the housing market.
The Federal Housing Finance Agency's proposal for a leaner Fannie and Freddie was released Tuesday and would mean fewer mortgages are backed by the government. That could make buying a home more expensive because it would lead to higher interest rates.
Under the plan, Fannie and Freddie could also increase its prices to guarantee loans and establish agreements with private investors to take on added credit risk.
The Obama administration last year laid out three options to wind down the government's support for the mortgage market slowly. Rather than making a single recommendation, the administration left the decision to Congress.
Fannie and Freddie buy mortgage loans from primary lenders, pool them, and sell them with a guarantee that investors will be paid even if borrowers default. The agencies have helped people buy homes at affordable interest rates.
But the two nearly collapsed in 2008, after the subprime mortgage market collapsed and defaults and foreclosures piled up. The government seized them in September 2008.
The bailouts of Fannie and Freddie have so far cost taxpayers roughly $150 billion, and that figure continues to grow. Republicans have called for Fannie and Freddie to be abolished, and have largely blamed the two for leading the country into the 2008 financial crisis.
But there is a growing recognition that drastic action would upend the housing finance system, threatening the broader economy.
Since they were taken over by the government, Fannie and Freddie have bought or guaranteed about 3 out of every 4 mortgages in the United States and more than 10 million Americans have refinanced Fannie- and Freddie-backed mortgages.

Student sues Ga. school district over strip search (AP)
ATLANTA ? A Georgia middle school student claimed in a lawsuit Wednesday he was humiliated and traumatized when he was brought to a vice principal's office and forced to strip in front of classmates who said he had marijuana.
The student, then in the seventh-grade, said he still suffers from emotional distress because his classmates taunted him by calling him Superman, the underwear he was wearing when he was strip-searched. The student is suing the Clayton County school district for unspecified punitive and compensatory damages.
Clayton County school officials didn't immediately respond to requests for comment about the lawsuit, filed in federal court.
The student, identified in court documents as D.H., said officials at Eddie White Academy initially strip-searched three other students on Feb. 8, 2011, after suspecting they had marijuana. One of them accused D.H. of having drugs, and he was brought to then-vice principal Tyrus McDowell's office.
While the three classmates watched, D.H.'s pockets and book bag were searched but didn't find anything, the lawsuit said. One of the students told school officials he had lied about D.H. having drugs, but administrators continued the search as D.H. begged to be taken to the bathroom for more privacy, according to the lawsuit.
D.H. was ordered to strip and again, no drugs were found.
"The strip searches were done intentionally, willfully, wantonly, maliciously, recklessly, sadistically, deliberately, with callous indifference to their consequences," according to the lawsuit, which also names as defendants the county's sheriff's department and Ricky Redding, the school's resource officer.
The student's attorney, Gerry Weber, said a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court ruling found school officials can't perform even a partial strip search of a student, even if they have probable cause.
Weber also litigated a case nearly a decade ago in which the federal appeals court in Atlanta found that a mass strip search of Clayton County students was unconstitutional because it violated their Fourth Amendment rights, which protect against an unreasonable search and seizure.
"This is like deja vu," said Weber. "It is simply beyond belief that students are still being stripped naked in the Clayton County schools."
Redding, who was also accused in the complaint of being involved in the search, was fired about a month later, the lawsuit said. McDowell was placed on administrative leave before subsequently resigning.
Redding declined to comment and McDowell could not be reached.
The student's mother, Angela Dawson, said her son still hasn't recovered.
"This situation has broken the very foundation of my child's education because in order for him to learn, he has to believe that what schools are trying to teach him is right and now he questions them after they stripped him of his clothes and dignity," she said. "His trust is broken."
