88% The Way, Way Back

All Critics (67) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (58) | Rotten (8)

The Way Way Back gets it wittily, thrillingly right. It turns the familiar into something bracingly fresh and funny. It makes you laugh, then breaks your heart.

Part of what makes Way, Way Back so engaging are the terrific performances.

It's likely there will be many wet eyes in the theater as the screen goes to black.

You don't see too many movies about the importance of fathers, and they're rarely done this well.

The film is awash in safe choices, from indie-pop-accompanied montages to sitcom one-liners and black-and-white characters.

A coming-of-age drama that manages some genuinely surprising turns despite the formulaic road it travels.

Refreshing coming-of-age tale a joy for teens and up.

Sam Rockwell deserves consideration for a Best Supporting Actor nomination --- he is that good.

Faxon, Rash, and their exceptionally capable cast have managed, with a story that is specific enough to feel new but universal enough to hit home.

a perceptive, incisive film about people at different points in their lives struggling or drowning

With a double dose of Rockwell - Norman and Sam - it's a picture-perfect portrait of what summer - and summer movies - ought to be.

There is a lot going on in "The Way, Way Back" and these stories are intelligently told.

You basically get to live vicariously through a kid who becomes Sam Rockwell's best pal, and I promise, that's all you've ever wanted, even if you don't know it yet.

It has its charms, most notably in Rockwell's wise-cracking put-on artist, but it never goes for anything really deep as 2009's similarly themed "Adventureland" did, while taking a few missteps along the way.

A sunny wonder that effortlessly out-classes such floundering box-office behemoths as The Lone Ranger and White House Down.

Warm, engaging, and thoroughly charming even though we can predict every turn in this old-fashioned coming of age story. Carell is terrific as an unlikable bully.

The Way, Way Back only really gets interesting when Carell enters the frame and introduces an unconventional villain into this entirely too-conventional coming-of-age scenario.

[Duncan is] a passive participant in his own story, and that does not make for an especially admirable protagonist.

As with The Descendants, Faxon and Rash ably balance the humorous and the heavy, tipping neither toward the silly nor the mawkish.

Let's Get Real About DIY Projects | DIY Home Staging Tips

Ever start a craft or home improvement project and give up after you?re halfway finished?

Or been disappointed when you?re done??

Yeah. We?ve all been there.

But the benefits of DIY are so compelling, we usually jump back on the DIY wagon.

Hiring a professional or buying off the shelf is fine for many home staging and decorating projects. Other times, it makes more sense to do the work yourself.

Done right, DIY saves money, gives you results that are unique and customized, and satisfies that urge to create.

What Are Problems with DIY?

But, DIY can also be a slippery slope. If you aren?t prepared with the right tools you can create more problems than you solve. You don?t want to hire someone for a do-over. If you don?t have the experience or know how, you could wind up way over budget. And still have results that look sloppy, cheap, or hack --- not what you want when you?re selling your home.

Also, safety is an issue. We've all seen enough America?s Funniest Videos to know how common falling off a ladder is, not to mention dealing with toxic paints, glues and solvents, handling unfamiliar power tools, and overusing muscles we didn?t know existed.

My safety advice is to wear the right clothing. Wear closed toe shoes when you're moving heavy objects. Wear a respirator when you spray paint. Wear goggles when you use a table saw. Wear latex gloves when you mix chemicals. And never underestimate the curiosity of small children.

Don't work on projects when you're tired, stressed, rushed or inebriated. Pay attention. Stop if you lose patience or reach a stalemate. DIY should be fun. ? ??

Learn How to Win the DIY War

The main reason most of us DIY is to save money. So, don?t jinx yourself by overspending.

Whether you are upcycling hand-me-downs, garage sale bargains, or knockoffs from the dollar store, starting with economical purchases lets you take creative risks fearlessly. Ruining a family heirloom or wasting expensive supplies is discouraging.

Success breeds more success, so make yourself a winner by starting with goof-proof materials.

Know where to buy. Be creative about sourcing. Learn the local and online sources for getting supplies you need, especially when buying in bulk.

Visit places like dollar stores, second hand stores, office supply stores, wholesale distributors, pawn shops, salvage yards, closeout bargain stores, and consignment shops. Search Craigslist, Freecycle, and eBay. Check sales at government offices, colleges, camps and other institutions because they sell furniture and equipment when they remodel.

Don?t forget Mother Nature as a source for natural materials like grapevines, logs, moss, leaves, branches, flowers, rocks, sand, and shells, to name some favorites.

Stay on the lookout for remodeling jobs or construction projects, and befriend the workers, where you can often walk away with doors, windows, lumber and other raw materials for projects of your own.

Just today I was visiting my friend Wendy, and she showed me some lumber she said she got free from Lowes. I said, "Lowes gives away lumber?" She told me she goes to where they cut lumber and if there are scraps she asks for them, sometimes big scraps. She told me the secret is to always ask for "Big Mike." She's made a friend.

Dumpster diving and curbside shopping are other common ways to acquire the makings of your home improvement projects, as long as you don?t turn your garage into a junkyard. My motto is, ?Don?t pay for new when second hand will do.? ???

Don?t buy tools you won?t need again. Power tools and special crafting tools are usually pricey. Even small tools can add up to a hefty bill.

Some supplies are sold only in bulk quantities. Consider borrowing or renting what you don?t have to own, such as an extension ladder, tile cutter, power washer, or miter saw. Renting a piece of equipment comes with the additional benefit of training. Tool rental places will give you a demonstration, something you don?t get from an instruction manual.

Take advantage of services that businesses offer. Home improvement stores will cut to order lumber, PVC pipe, wire, and glass for free or a small fee. (Ask for Big Mike first.) Frame departments at craft stores can frame your DIY artwork.

If your project requires a step that?s outside your skill set, go to the ?Gigs? section of Craigslist, and you will find local people available for work. Sometimes you can trade skills or products. A friend of mine babysits her neighbor?s toddler while the neighbor gives her an equal amount of yardwork time.

Prepare Mentally

Do your homework. Trial and error can be costly. Read what others have done. Don't depend on just one source of advice. Research where to buy both tools and supplies. Talk to any professionals you know who have been there. Look on Pinterest, or google your project for online tutorials and videos. Take a class at the local craft store, garden center, or home improvement store.

A word about collecting materials for a DIY project: plan to have some oops if you?re new to a particular craft. Mistakes happen. It?s good to have that extra fabric, some spare nails, more paint than the plans call for, or scrap paper to practice on. Also, plan on a project taking more time than the craft books, HGTV, and YouTube tutorials suggest. I estimate my completion time, and multiply by three! ? ? ? ?

If you get bored or disappointed with the project, take a break. Call on someone more knowledgeable to advise you. If things go wrong, just remind yourself that creative processes often take unexpected turns, sometimes with surprisingly good results.?

For tedious or repetitive projects, develop a system to be efficient. Work from left to right, or vice versa if that works better. Keep all tools handy and visible, not scattered around your home or work area. ? ?

Pretend that the Y in DIY stands for ?yourselves.? Whether it?s your spouse, roommate, friend, sibling, or teenager, an extra pair of hands and the additional brainpower can make the difference between completing a fabulous task and giving up in frustration.

It?s very disappointing to begin a DIY project all bright-eyed and then abandon it in despair, or else finish it with less than satisfactory results. Know your limits. Know when to hire someone to do the job. If you?re excited about creating an ambitious home improvement project, review the steps and check your budget. You may decide you?re dreaming of a DDIY ? a don?t-do-it-yourself.

Proposal to Split Farm Bill Divides Congress

How the House Republican leadership tries to salvage the failed farm bill is becoming a test of the leadership of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and it will also pit the power of the farmers and antihunger activists against the conservative groups that want to dismantle both the farm and food-stamp programs.

But the real political and policy issue is whether House members have become more responsive to national conservative groups than to farmers and antihunger advocates in their own districts who know the importance of the farm bill to a major industry and to providing food to jobless and low-paid people.

Since June 20, when the bill failed to pass the House by a vote of 234 to 195, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va. , the Heritage Foundation, and the Club for Growth seem to be using the farm bill as a tool in a campaign to portray Boehner as a weak leader and make the more conservative Cantor the speaker. Like Boehner, Cantor voted for the farm bill, but since its failure, Cantor has promoted the idea of splitting the bill in two, which would allow separate votes on the nutrition and farm programs.

Whether Cantor can assemble the votes to pass the two separate measures is uncertain. Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., who wants separate votes, said last week that the momentum was going his way. But Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said he doubts there is support for splitting the bill, and Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa, said that the way to get the bill passed may be to bring it up without the amendment sponsored by Rep. Steve Southerland, R-Fla., to which antihunger advocates and Democrats objected most. That amendment would allow states to impose work and training requirements to food stamps. If the applicants couldn't meet them, the states could deny benefits and keep half the money.

But even if the farm bill is split in two, it looks like Heritage and the Club for Growth would still recommend that members vote against it, because they object to the underlying programs. Heritage said in a memo that its six principles for farm-bill reform are separating food stamps from the farm program, turning food stamps into a "work activation" program, adding no new farm programs, avoiding any increase in the cost of crop insurance, capping premium subsidies, and repealing the sugar and dairy programs on the grounds that they raise food prices. Since there is no way that a single farm bill or two bills will contain all those provisions, there seems no possibility that lawmakers who vote for the farm bill can get relief from a barrage of conservative criticism.

Last week the relentlessness of the conservative campaign became apparent when House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., was back in his district. On July 1, the Tulsa World reported that conservative activists, some of whom do not live in Lucas's 3rd District, had shown up that day at a town-hall meeting in Skiatook, Okla. "If you want the conservative Republican vote, you need to come forward with a conservative Republican bill," said Ronda Vuillemont-Smith, a conservative activist from Broken Arrow, which is in the 1st District, where tea-party groups in 2012 ousted Republican Rep. John Sullivan in favor of now-Rep. Jim Bridenstine, who voted against the farm bill.

Lucas, who has also been the target of Heritage Action radio ads threatening to recruit a "real conservative" to run against him, fought back. "I'm under attack by those people," Lucas said. "They're coming after me. They are all special interest groups that exist to sell subscriptions, to collect seminar fees, and to perpetuate their goals."

Lucas continued, "You've got to understand: They don't necessarily want a Republican president or a Republican Congress," he continued. "?They made more money when [Democrat] Nancy [Pelosi] was speaker.? It's a business."

Vuillemont-Smith replied: "That's a perverted way to look at it."

"I'm sorry. I have to deal in the real world," Lucas said, adding that by opposing the bill, conservatives were turning their back on the bill's $40 billion in savings over 10 years, including a $20 billion cut in food stamps.

When Congress comes back to Washington on Monday, members will find that farm and nutrition groups are much better organized than they were when the House voted on the bill. In retrospect, it appears that farm groups were so focused on amendments on crop insurance, the commodity title, and the sugar and dairy programs that they did not rally votes for final passage, while nutrition groups voiced opposition to all food stamp cuts.

But on July 2, a coalition of 532 farm groups?almost the entire rural establishment from farm groups to conservationists to bankers?sent Boehner a letter urging him to bring up the farm bill again as soon as possible and not to split it into two. "This important legislation supports our nation's farmers, ranchers, forest owners, food security, natural resources and wildlife habitats, rural communities, and the 16 million Americans whose jobs directly depend on the agriculture industry," wrote groups ranging from the American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Farmers Union to the American Bankers Association and the World Wildlife Fund. "We believe that splitting the nutrition title from the rest of the bill could result in neither farm nor nutrition programs passing, and urge you to move a unified farm bill forward," the coalition added.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, which represents smaller, environmentally minded farmers, also sent a letter to Boehner and Pelosi urging them "to work together" to bring the bill back to the floor as soon as possible. "This is critical legislation that should not be allowed to continue to drift further into uncertainty," the group wrote. "Nor should it be split up into narrower component parts, a move that dooms its completion."

The Environmental Working Group, which had sided with the conservative and nurition groups in opposing the bill, also said it favors keeping it intact. "Dividing and passing separate bills will not make it any easier for the House and Senate to reconcile competing bills and send a final bill to the president for signature," Scott Faber, an EWG vice president, told National Journal Daily.

Antihunger advocates, which had praised the failure of the bill because it would have made cuts to food stamps, initially stayed out of the fray, but led by Robert Greenstein of the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, they have begun coming out against splitting the bill. Greenstein said in an interview that all antihunger, religious, and civic groups involved in fighting hunger should tell members of Congress to vote against both bills if the Republican leadership splits them up. Although he has often criticized some parts of the farm bill, Greenstein said the multidecade history of bipartisan, comprehensive farm bills has achieved "sounder policy and more sustainable policy" than taking up the issues separately. Separating out food stamps, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, "would take the SNAP bill farther to the right and make bigger cuts," Greenstein said. If the bill gets to conference with the Senate and there is no agreement on SNAP, "I worry that it sets the program up for a ceaseless attack over time because it is unauthorized," he added.

The Food Research Action Center, Feeding America, Share Our Strength, and Bread for the World all said in e-mails they are opposed to splitting the bill. Key consumer leaders Carol Tucker Foreman of the Consumer Federation of America and Patty Lovera of Food and Water Watch also said the programs should be kept together.

History shows that it is wise for nutrition advocates to keep nutrition programs within the farm bill. In 1996, then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., had proposed turning food stamps over to the states as part of his Contract with America. In order to get enough votes that year to pass a new farm bill, then-House Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., made sure that the farm bill maintained the structure of the program, but the farm bill reauthorized food stamps for only two years and left the major changes to the program in the welfare reform act. Absent the farm bill, Congress made the biggest cuts to food stamps in the history of the program, and it took antihunger advocates years of action on subsequent farm legislation to claw back the benefits.

Whether all this unity convinces Congress to bring up a single bill may depend on whether the farm and nutrition advocates can persuade freshmen and sophomore members of Congress who are not primarily from rural areas to do so. While farm advocates and political analysts have expressed shock that some members of the House Agriculture Committee and some committee chairmen voted against final passage even though they won their amendments, most of the 62 Republicans who voted against final passage were freshman and sophomore members.

When the Waterways Council, which represents ports and inland waterways, held a news conference shortly after the failure of the farm bill to announce that its members expect to convince the House to pass a reauthorization of the Water Resources Development Act this year, their lobbyists said they believe they can beat the odds by establishing better relationships with the more recently elected members of Congress than the farm lobbyists did.

Randy Russell, an agriculture lobbyist who served in the Reagan administration and has close ties to Republicans, said that if the Republican leadership "makes a calculation" that splitting the bill is a way to get conference, he would try to rally votes for the bills. But Russell added that he is not a fan of splitting the bill because it would make conference with the Senate so difficult.

It's unclear how Democrats would vote on the bill. House Agriculture Committee ranking member Collin Peterson, D-Minn., said he would vote against a single food-stamp bill, but he has not said how he would vote on the farm-program bill.

But the real battle is among the Republicans. An analysis of the most competitive House districts in 2014 by James Carville and Stan Greenberg of Democracy Corps shows the importance for advocates of a single bill of reaching Republicans who are not vulnerable to Democrats. Almost all of the most vulnerable 24 Republicans voted for the farm bill.

Whatever happens, the farm bill has become part of the stratosphere of today's national politics.

MADISON, WI????We do not get options. we don?t get to choose whether we get spied on or not. If I could opt out of it that would be fine, but I can?t, so it is my business. I don?t understand why you can?t just have some accountability?,?said an intelligent young woman, tearing the NSA recruiters apart for blindly following authority without questioning the implications. She completely turned around the NSA?s sales pitch to recruit new workers, and left the recruiters speechless.

The recruiters began to bold faced lie in desperate report?claiming, they don?t spy on very many Americans. ?We have never done anything without permission of the 3 branches of government?,?said an NSA recruiter, stuttering and having difficulty finding words and finding no moral objection to blindly following authority.

The real mistake these workers for the NSA make, is not questioning authority, but more importantly, not knowing the true background history and info about the authority and those who are in and control government. They don?t do their research.

An objectively educated person who has utilized certain books and the Internet, would know exactly what is wrong with the current system, and how the dangerous framework of a military dictatorship is being put in place. An objective person would understand that we are in a fight for our most essential of liberties right now.

This video below contains the audio clip of the young woman tearing the NSA recruiters apart, I highly recommend you listen to it. It is very inspiring.

This is some positive news for gauging the consciousness of this generation and youth who have just become adults if one is to look at them collectively for a moment while recognizing them as individuals too. If you think this would be a positive thing for another person to hear, or someone possibly still believes the NSA is good or necessary, don?t forget to share this video with as many people who need this info as possible, and perhaps someone who?s day could be brightened by this too.

Ed Miliband prepares to curb union power as polls show fall in Labour lead over Conservatives

Ed Miliband will this week unveil proposals to reduce the power of trade union bosses inside the Labour Party as he tries to regain the initiative in his battle with the country?s biggest union.

The pressure on Mr Miliband will be increased by The Independent?s latest poll of polls, which shows that Labour?s lead over the Conservatives has fallen from 13 to six points in the past four months. Mr Miliband?s personal ratings have dropped to their lowest since the spring of last year. These figures were compiled before the controversy with Unite and could get worse if the public regards Labour as divided.

However, Miliband allies believe he will emerge much stronger from his biggest crisis since becoming Labour. He will announce ?bold? reforms to the party?s rulebook to give more rights and more say to the 3m affiliated union members who pay the political levy to the party. At present their voice is heard through leaders such as Len McCluskey, general secretary of Unite.? He is embroiled in a war of words with Mr Miliband after police were called in to investigate allegations the union signed up about 100 party members in Falkirk, Scotland, some without their knowledge, to secure its favoured candidate as Labour?s standard-bearer at the 2015 election.

Mr Miliband will bring in a code of conduct for candidate selections in an attempt to stamp out such malpractice. There will? be a campaign spending limit for would-be candidates, to prevent union-backed ones enjoying an advantage over others.

However, the Miliband reforms could disappoint Blairites as he is unlikely to reduce the unions? 50 per cent share of the vote at Labour?s annual conference or their 33 per cent share of the electoral college which chooses the party?s leader, the same proportion as Labour MPs and individual members.

At present, union levy-payers must opt out if they do not want affiliation fees to go to Labour. One option would be for them to actively opt in, a move opposed by union leaders but supported by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. It is unclear whether Mr Miliband will go that far.

The Independent?s weighted average of the June polls by ComRes, ICM, Ipsos MORI and YouGov confirms that Labour?s lead has narrowed after Tory attacks over the economy, welfare and Europe. Labour is on 37 per cent, the Tories 31 per cent, the UK Independence Party 13 per cent, the Liberal Democrats 11 per cent and others eight per cent. Although that would still give Labour an overall majority at a general election, many Labour MPs believe the party needs a bigger cushion.

Mr Miliband?s net performance rating, the difference between the percentage of people thinking he is doing well or badly, has dropped to minus 33, his worst since April 2012. David Cameron?s rating, which has improved over the same period, is now at minus 17.

John Curtice, Professor of Politics at Strathclyde University, who compiled the poll of polls, said Labour has ?cause for anxiety? because Mr Miliband?s ratings have slid and because the party?s recent announcements on the deficit have not yet enhanced its reputation for economic competence.

However, the Tories have little to cheer and are the principal loser of votes to Ukip, he suggested. ?We continue to have very much the kind of environment in which Ukip could well continue to be able to prosper for quite a while yet,? he said.

Mr McCluskey accused Labour of playing into the Tories? hands and urged Mr Miliband to ?step back from the brink of? a ruinous division.?

Spurred on by Graf, Lisicki makes Wimbledon final

LONDON (AP) ? Spurred on by Steffi Graf and inspired by an array of other sporting greats, Sabine Lisicki pulled herself out of a big hole and climbed right into the Wimbledon final.

The 23rd-seeded German, a Wimbledon semifinalist two years ago, overcame a 3-0 deficit in the third set to beat Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 2-6, 9-7 Thursday and advance to her first Grand Slam final.

On Saturday, she will face Marion Bartoli, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Kirsten Flipkens in the other semifinal.

"It's another challenge, and I'm looking forward to it," said Lisicki, who beat defending champion Serena Williams in the fourth round.

The men's semifinals are set for Friday, with top-seeded Novak Djokovic playing Juan Martin del Potro and 2012 finalist Andy Murray up against the surprising 24th-seeded Jerzy Janowicz.

Saturday's final will be the second at Wimbledon in the 45-year Open era between two women who have never won a Grand Slam title. Although Bartoli has the edge in experience after reaching the 2007 final at the All England Club, Lisicki may have the bigger advantage with a 3-1 record against the Frenchwoman, including a quarterfinal win at Wimbledon in 2011 in their last meeting.

Lisicki started off Thursday playing aggressive tennis on Centre Court, and it yielded immediate results. She won 22 of her 30 points on serve and broke Radwanska once.

But soon after, Lisicki's serve deserted her, and so did her lead.

Lisicki lost all four of her service games in the second set, with the lowlight coming in the final game. Leading 30-0, Lisicki lost four straight points, including two double-faults.

"She made some really good points. I made a few errors too many," said Lisicki, the first German to reach the Wimbledon final since Graf in 1999. "But I regained my focus and game in the third set, and that's the main part."

Graf may have played a small role in the comeback. The seven-time Wimbledon champion sent Lisicki a text message before the match to wish her luck.

"She told me to go for it, and I'm just so happy," Lisicki said. "I was just fighting for every single point out there. Fought my heart out there."

Besides Graf, Lisicki also named a few others who have helped inspire her to come back from a serious left ankle injury in 2010, including ski great Hermann Maier and NFL quarterback Drew Brees.

"I read his book while I was injured," Lisicki said of Maier, an Austrian who won several Olympic and world championship medals. "Almost losing his leg and then to come back and be the world champion in his sport, I think was an unbelievable story.

"Also Drew Brees. ... He has torn everything there was in the shoulder, and he still came back and was one of the best."

Bartoli needed no such motivation, making quick work of Flipkens with her two-handed backhands and forehands mixing with little hops between points, as is her custom.

"I played great. I executed very well. I hit lobs, passing shots, winners, returns, everything worked out perfectly," said Bartoli, who won in 62 minutes. "When I fell on the grass after match point, it was just so emotional. I dreamed about that moment, about returning to the Wimbledon final."

The last time she made it this far, it didn't turn out so well. She lost to Venus Williams 6-4, 6-1.

But this time is different, or at least Bartoli believes it will be.

"God, I think I'm serving better," Bartoli said. "I mean, I do just everything a bit better than what I was doing six years ago. I think if I would play myself now, with my game six years ago compared with my game today, I would probably be beating myself quite easily because I'm just doing everything better."

NBA 2K14 will feature Barcelona, 13 other European teams

Basketball is an international game, and it?s growing.

Selling video games is an international business.

So maybe we shouldn?t be shocked by the news that the Euroleague has teamed up with the makers of NBA 2K14 to include 14 teams of the powerhouse overseas teams in the video game.

?We?re absolutely delighted to be able to welcome top Euroleague teams into the NBA 2K series,? said Jason Argent, senior vice president of sports operations for 2K Sports. ?European basketball has an incredibly passionate following, and we?re all excited to give fans the opportunity to take on Europe?s best in NBA 2K14.?

So finally you can have Ricky Rubio or Pau Gasol playing against Barcelona. The teams included are from the Euroleague, which is a tournament matching 31 of the best club teams from across that continent against teach other (basically the equivalent of soccer?s Champions League).

Here are the 14 teams that will be part of the game:

? Alba Berlin
? FC Barcelona
? Real Madrid
? CSKA Moscow
? EA7 Emporio Armani Milano
? Montepaschi Siena
? Fenerbah?e ?lker Istanbul
? Anadolu Efes Istanbul
? Olympiacos Piraeus
? Panathinaikos Athens
? Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv
? Zalgiris Kaunas
? Unicaja M?laga
? Laboral Kutxa Vitoria

Go ahead and shrug if you want and say you liked it better when Jordan was on the cover. This is going to sell more NBA 2K14 games in Spain, Turkey, Italy, and Russia and so this move makes sense for the makers of the video game.

And actually, it should be fun to see if you can get Pavel Datsyuk to lead CSKA Moscow past LeBron James and the Heat.

Meet Consano, The Crowdfunding Platform That Wants To Help Cure Cancer [TCTV]

Crowdfunding has been a godsend for getting lots of projects off the ground that otherwise may not have attracted dollars from traditional powers-that-be in retail manufacturing, music, movies, and the like. So at a time when the federal dollars that typically fund medical research are under more constraint than ever, doesn?t it make sense to bring that same model that has worked so well for wristwatches and rock albums to work for curing breast cancer and new methods for lung transplants?

That?s what Molly Lindquist believes, so she founded a non-profit organization called Consano for allowing people to browse through vetted medical research projects at select universities and research institutions, and then contribute funding directly to the ones they find compelling.

It?s a fascinating model that could really shake things up and help to empower individual scientists. So we invited the Portland, Oregon-based Lindquist to come by the TechCrunch TV studio when she was in San Francisco recently to tell us all about it.

Lindquist told us that herself is a breast cancer survivor, so the roots of Consano come from a very personal place. She realized when she was diagnosed that she wanted a way to provide direct funding to research about the specific gene that may have triggered her ailment, which is the same gene her two young daughters also carry. Organizations such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure are wonderful for getting the word out about breast cancer and funding general research, but Lindquist also wanted a way to provide direct support to projects herself. After lots of discussions with medical professionals and research institutions, Consano was born.

Please watch the video above to see what the site looks like and hear more about Consano?s beginnings and plans for the future.

Trayvon Martin's mother says she's certain her son cried for help

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) - Trayvon Martin's mother said in court on Friday she recognized the voice of her son screaming for help in an emergency call on the night the black Florida teenager was shot dead by neighborhood watchman George Zimmermann.

Sybrina Fulton's testimony came as the state was preparing to wrap up its murder case against Zimmerman after nearly two weeks of testimony. The prosecution has sought to expose inconsistencies in his account of the fight in Sanford, Florida, in February last year that ended with Martin's death.

Fulton told jurors she was certain it was her son who can be heard screaming for help in the background of an emergency call made to police moments before he died.

"I heard my son screaming," said Fulton, who added that she first heard the recording in the office of the mayor of this town near Orlando where her son died.

Testimony from voice-recognition experts has been ruled inadmissible in the trial on the grounds that it was impossible to tell from the brief, poor-quality recording whether it was Martin or Zimmerman calling for help.

In addition to Martin's mother, the state's final witnesses included his brother, 22-year-old Jahvaris Fulton, who said he too was convinced it was his brother who can be heard screaming on the recording.

Other witnesses on Friday, as the state ran through the last of dozens of people it has called to testify, included the central Florida medical examiner who performed the autopsy on Martin.

Dr Shiping Bao said Martin did not die instantly, even though the lone bullet from Zimmerman's 9 mm Kel-Tec semi-automatic handgun pierced the right ventricle of his heart.

"It is my opinion that he was still alive, he was still in pain, he was still suffering," said Bao, even as he stressed that the wound was something Martin could not possibly have survived.

TOOK UP TO 10 MINUTES TO DIE

"I believe that he was alive for one to 10 minutes after he was shot," he added.

Bao's testimony was accompanied by graphic photographs from the autopsy that were shown to jurors.

Once the prosecution rests its so-called "case in chief," it will be the turn of the defense to present its case.

Legal experts said that before doing so, Zimmerman's legal team could simply make an argument for acquittal on grounds that the state has failed to meet its burden of proof.

It is still unclear whether the defense will choose to put Zimmerman, who is 29 and part Hispanic, on the stand to testify.

The former neighborhood watchman contends that he killed Martin in self-defense. He faces up to life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.

After the defense concludes its case, the prosecution is entitled to present a rebuttal.

In testimony on Wednesday, before a one-day break for the U.S. Independence Day holiday, jurors heard that Zimmerman was well versed in Florida's self-defense laws before he shot Martin, despite his previous claim to the contrary.

On Tuesday, Judge Debra Nelson let the jury hear a television interview in which Zimmerman said he had no knowledge of Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, which underpins his trial defense.

But an army prosecutor who taught Zimmerman in a 2010 college class on criminal litigation, testified that he often covered Florida's self-defense and "Stand Your Ground" laws in his 2010 course. Army Captain Alexis Carter said Zimmerman "was probably one of the better students in the class," calling him an "A" student.

Under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, which was approved in 2005 and has been copied in some form by about 30 other U.S. states, people fearing for their lives can use deadly force even if is possible for them to retreat from a confrontation.

The statute is central to Zimmerman's defense in a case that has captivated the United States because police initially declined to arrest Zimmerman based on his self-defense argument and the right to use deadly force under Florida law.

Jobs report stronger than expected in June. What happens next?

The economy added 195,000 jobs in June, a strong showing that beat analysts' expectations. Steady job growth is good news, but it means that higher interest rates and an easing of Federal Reserve bond buying could come sooner rather than later, putting investors on edge.?

Wall Street has been waiting for the June jobs report with particular interest, with federal actions and investor sentiment riding on how the labor market performs over the next few months. This time around, the news is a hopeful if tempered indicator of slow, steady growth.

The US economy added 195,000 jobs in June, and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.6 percent. That was notably better than predicted: Analysts had expected about 165,000 jobs added. Additionally, the job totals for April and May were revised upward, by about 70,000 jobs combined.

?The June employment report showed solid job growth? The gain in nonfarm payrolls was much larger than we and [the] consensus were expecting,? Barclays Research economist Michael Gapen wrote in an e-mailed analysis. ??Although the unemployment rate did not move lower, we see this report as signaling that labor markets are improving.?

At the beginning of the year, analysts worried that the sweeping federal budget cuts known as the ?sequester? would cause economic growth to falter. for the most part, that hasn?t happened. At least not yet.

?I would have expected that the fiscal headwinds would be doing a bit more damage, and expected 150,000 to 125,000 per month [in jobs added], ? Moody?s economist Mark Zandi said in a Wednesday conference call.? We have seen some slowing in GDP, but the economy has been navigating it quite gracefully.?

Mr. Zandi points out that the fiscal drag expected as a result of the sequester may have been offset by better than expected gains in other areas. The stock market rallied to record highs in the first part of the year, ?giving business executives a reason to hang tough,? and avoid layoffs.? House prices have surged.? Oil and gas prices have fallen, benefitting lower and middle income households and likely offsetting the ill effects of the expiration of payroll tax cut.

?All of those things came together,? he says. And, ?If there?s no change in policy, the fiscal headwinds will start to fade in the end of the year.?

Analysts expect that if the labor market holds steady and job creation continues at the current rate, the unemployment rate will dip below 7 percent sometime in mid- 2014. That number is key, because the Federal Reserve will allow long-term interest rates to rise once it's reached.

?Stronger payrolls mean higher long-term interest rates for the economy,? IHS Global Insight economist Paul Edelstein writes in an e-mailed analysis. ?Indeed, 10-year Treasury rates surged 18 basis points to 2.69% following the report. Strong payrolls should boost market expectations for economic growth and inflation, which can push up bond yields. ?

In the shorter, term, there is much speculation over whether or not the Fed will scale back its bond purchases by the end of the summer. Many economists, including Mr. Gapen at Barclays, expect the Fed to taper its purchases in September, and ?conclude its purchases in March of next year.?

But others argue that the economic growth may prove softer than it looks right now, which could delay tapering. ?Much is going to depend on the data flow over coming months, and we continue to believe that the economy?s momentum will prove to be less than forecast by the Fed and hence that tapering will not occur as soon as the market is anticipating,? ?MFR, Inc. economist Joshua Shapiro writes via e-mailed analysis. ?With that said, the GDP data will be thoroughly overhauled at the end of the month. Forecasts could change significantly with that new information, so we are refraining from pounding the table about near-term growth and what it may mean for the tapering decision.?

"The script?s still being writtern here, we stil have more to go," Zandi says. My gut tells me that the current data might look a little softer than they do right now. ?when we look back and evaluate history there may be more of an effect [from the sequester] than we thought."?

Sony's Crackle arrives on BlackBerry 10, reminds us to not watch Bad Boys II

Slowly, but steadily, BlackBerry's building its BB10 app catalog with some major gets. Today, that burgeoning list grows by a very important one with the addition of Sony's Crackle. The free, ad-based streaming video service, which culls together content from Sony's various TV and film studios, is available to download now from BlackBerry World. It's also compatible with the Q10's teeny, 3.1-inch screen, so if you hate your good eyesight, you can devote an hour or two to reliving the opus that is Bad Boys II. Sure, popular apps like Instagram, Hulu Plus and Netflix have yet to make their way over to BB10, but you can't fault the Waterloo-based outfit for getting users what it can. Even if that means bringing them Bad Boys II.

Strong June seen for auto sales, led by pickups

This Feb. 14, 2013 photo shows the Chrysler logo on a sign at the 2013 Pittsburgh Auto Show in Pittsburgh. Chrysler's U.S. sales rose 11 percent in May, a sign that auto sales rebounded from a slight dip in April and will continue to boost the U.S. economy. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)

(AP) ? U.S. buyers snapped up new cars and trucks in June at a pace not seen since before the recession.

Continuing demand for big pickups helped boost sales for Detroit's automakers. Ford said Tuesday that its sales rose 14 percent, while Chrysler's were up 8 percent. Volkswagen's sales fell 3 percent.

Other automakers will report sales later Tuesday.

Analysts say they don't see much that could slow the sales momentum of the first six months. The factors that juiced sales ? low interest rates, wider credit availability, rising home construction and hot new vehicles ? are likely to remain in place. So far, hiccups in the stock market, higher taxes and fluctuating gas prices haven't dampened demand.

"I think the fundamentals for continued growth in the new vehicle sales industry are intact," Chrysler's U.S. sales chief, Reid Bigland, said last week.

Analyst estimate that U.S. auto sales rose 6 percent to 8 percent in June compared with the same month last year. The auto pricing site TrueCar.com predicts that dealers sold cars and trucks at an annualized rate of 15.7 million last month, the best rate since December 2007.

Sales of pickups ? which have been selling at a rate three times faster than the rest of the industry has ? continued at a strong pace in June. Ford sold just over 68,000 F-Series trucks, up 24 percent from last June and the best June for trucks since 2005.

Chrysler Group sold nearly 30,000 full-size Ram pickups, up 24 percent from last June. Small businesses have been replacing their aging trucks as home construction has picked up.

Young graduates may have contributed to a rise in small car sales, said Kelley Blue Book analyst Alec Gutierrez. Gas prices, which averaged $3.60 a gallon nationwide in June and were higher than a year ago, also may have caused some buyers to look for more fuel-efficient models, he said.

Sales of Ford's recently updated Fiesta subcompact more than doubled to 9,363, while Chrysler sold nearly 6,500 Dodge Dart small cars.

Consumer confidence hit a six-year high in June. And the Standard & Poor's 500 index had its best first half since 1998, up 12.6 percent, although there was some volatility late last month.

At the same time, auto loan rates remained near historic lows in June. The rate on a four-year new-car loan is averaging 2.7 percent, according to Bankrate.com.

The rate could start rising ? slowly ? by the end of this year. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said last month that the Fed later this year may slow a bond-buying program that has suppressed long-term interest rates.

Bernanke's comments didn't affect June sales, analysts said. It often takes buyers six months or more to research and buy a new car, and a stray comment usually isn't enough to sway them. But if the Fed acts as planned, buyers worried about higher interest rates could rush to buy by the end of this year.

Ford said two of its best sellers, the Fusion sedan and Escape SUV, were flat compared with last year, when Ford was discounting older models to make way for the updated ones that are now on sale. Ford's Lincoln luxury brand was down 1 percent.

Chrysler, majority-owned by Fiat SpA of Italy, also had some weak spots. Jeep sales were flat as the company halted production of the Liberty to get ready for the launch of the new Jeep Cherokee in August.

Jeep may also have been squeezed by Chrysler's public flap with the government last month over the safety of some older-model Jeeps. And sales for the Chrysler and Fiat brands both rose 1 percent.

Growth in cerebral aneurysms increases risk of rupture

Growth in cerebral aneurysms increases risk of rupture [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 2-Jul-2013

Radiological Society of North America

OAK BROOK, Ill. Cerebral aneurysms of all sizeseven small ones below seven millimetersare 12 times more likely to rupture if they are growing in size, according to a new study published online in the journal Radiology.

A cerebral aneurysm is a balloon-like bulge in a weakened blood vessel in the brain. If an aneurysm ruptures, blood is leaked into or around the brain, which can cause brain damage or death.

According to The Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an estimated 6 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm, or 1 in 50 people. Ruptured brain aneurysms occur in approximately 30,000 Americans each year and are fatal in about 40 percent of cases. Of those who survive, about two-thirds suffer some permanent neurological deficit.

"Given what a devastating event a ruptured brain aneurysm is, we are very motivated to identify the real risk factors for rupture," said the study's lead author, J. Pablo Villablanca, M.D., chief of diagnostic neuroradiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

In Dr. Villablanca's study, 258 asymptomatic cerebral aneurysms identified either incidentally or during a baseline study of 165 patients (132 women, 33 men) were monitored over time (mean of 2.24 years) with computed tomography angiography (CTA), a noninvasive imaging study of the brain's blood vessels. Patients were scanned with CTA at intervals of six or 12 months.

Over the study period, the researchers observed growth in 46 or nearly 18 percent of all the intracranial aneurysms in a total of 38 patients. Three of the 39 growing saccular aneurysms ruptured, and of those, all were less than seven millimeters in size at study entry.

"Our study shows that the size of the aneurysm is not as important as was once thought," Dr. Villablanca said. "Any aneurysm is potentially capable of growth and thus requires follow-up imaging."

Current guidelines based on research conducted by the International Study of Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms and other studies suggest that known aneurysms less than seven millimeters in size have a low risk of rupture and do not need to be monitored with imaging.

Compared to the aneurysms that stayed the same size, the 46 growing aneurysms in the study were associated with a 12-fold higher risk of rupture. The researchers calculated the risk of rupture for growing aneurysms at 2.4 percent per patient-year, versus 0.2 percent for aneurysms without growth.

"Our data support the need to perform longitudinal follow-up imaging to monitor for possible growth in all incidental unruptured aneurysms, including small lesions," Dr. Villablanca said.

The researchers also found that tobacco smoking and the initial size of the aneurysm were independent predictors of aneurysm growth. Together, these risk factors were associated with 78.4 percent of all aneurysm growth in the study.

"The positive association between aneurysm growth, aneurysm size, and cigarette smoking suggests that the combination of these factors are associated with an increased risk of rupture and may influence the need for therapeutic intervention," Dr. Villablanca said.

Observation was the treatment of choice for 194 of 212 (91 percent) stable aneurysms. When aneurysm growth was discovered by CTA imaging, 50 percent of the growing aneurysms were treated, while the remaining 50 percent continued to be observed.
