(AP) ? Online retailer Amazon says 2011 was the best holiday ever for its Kindle-brand e-readers and tablet computers.

Amazon.com Inc. said Thursday that people bought more than 1 million Kindles each week in December.

The company has never released specific sales figures for the Kindle. Since the launch of the first Kindle in 2007, this franchise has grown to include several e-readers and the Kindle Fire tablet.

The Kindle Fire is expected to be one of the first true competitors to Apple's iPad. Amazon says the Fire has been the best-selling product on its site since its introduction 13 weeks ago.

Even so, the iPad is still expected outsell all other tablets, including the $199 Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Inc.'s new $249 Nook Tablet. The iPad starts at $499.

Italy probes report that Colosseum stones fall

(AP) ? Italy's culture ministry said Wednesday that it is investigating reports that bits of rock have fallen from the Colosseum.

Witnesses reported seeing the fallen masonry Sunday. Italian news agency ANSA reported another bit fell Tuesday, but Colosseum director Rossella Rea denied it and blamed the false report on a "psychosis" that occurs every so often that Rome's iconic stadium is crumbling.

Italian environmental group Legambiente has frequently raised the alarm about the precarious state of the Colosseum, charging that auto exhaust fumes and vibrations from vehicles and a nearby subway are damaging the Colosseum's travertine exterior and brick and tufa interior.

A euro25 million ($33 million) restoration, paid for by Diego Della Valle, founder of shoemaker Tod's, is set to begin in March.

Free, legal Siri port now available for iPhone 4 and other iOS 5 devices

News of a new untethered jailbreak solution for all iOS 5.0.1 devices other than Apple?s iPhone 4S and iPad 2 emerged this morning, and iOS users now have another reason to take advantage of the hack. IOS developer?chpwn announced on his blog on Tuesday that a free Siri port dubbed ?Spire? that does not violate any copyright laws is now available for jailbroken iOS 5 devices. This is not the first Siri port available for the iPhone 4 and other devices, but it is the first legal option and it also allows users to input their own proxy server since Apple?s servers cannot be used by devices other than the iPhone 4S. Spire is now available for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and third and fourth-generation iPod touch devices, and it can be downloaded from Cydia.

Military battle against militants in Yemen kill 9

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemeni soldiers battled al-Qaida-linked militants Monday outside the southern city of Zinjibar, which remains partly under the control of the Islamists. Five soldiers and four fighters were killed, a military official said.

The intense fighting in northern and eastern Zinjibar included artillery and rocket shelling on militant hideouts, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.

He said the military units were engaged in pitched battles with armed gangs deployed on the streets, and have advanced on areas controlled by the militants.

At least 60 people, including 23 soldiers, have been killed in the fighting since last week.

Islamic militants, including some with links to the al-Qaida branch in Yemen, seized control of Zinjibar and another town in April and May. They were taking advantage of the turmoil surrounding the popular uprising against President Ali Abdullah Saleh to expand their area of operations.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula was behind several nearly successful attempts to attack U.S. targets, including the failed attempt to down a passenger jet bound for Detroit on Christmas Day 2009. Washington believes it is the most dangerous of several al-Qaida's offshoots around the globe.

President Saleh has cooperated with the U.S. in fighting the group and used the threat of al-Qaida in arguing that he could not relinquish power in Yemen despite the protests calling for him to go since February.

The U.S. withdrew its support of Saleh in the summer, and the autocratic leader signed a deal last month to transfer power in exchange for immunity from prosecution over the deaths of protesters and corruption during his 33 years in power.

The deal has failed to quell the protests in Yemen, which have recently expanded to include labor strikes, calling for Saleh loyalists to be removed from office and for Saleh to be put on trial.

On Monday, Yemen's military agreed to replace a commander accused of corruption, apparently settling a brief strike by 1,000 soldiers, said Anwar Abdullah, an officer in a military department that deals with public affairs and army morale. Abdullah said that the strikers demanded the ouster of department head Maj. Gen. Ali al-Shater for mismanagement, accusing him of running his own prison, in which some soldiers were jailed even for minor offenses. Some were kept in chains.

Abdullah said after the prime minister intervened in the dispute Monday, it was agreed that al-Shater would be replaced.

The soldiers said they would end their strike when the defense minister appoints a new commander.

Perry off VA primary ballot; GOP Clown Car wreck (Update: Newt’s off)

[Posted by Karl]

In the lexicon of Rick Perry, ?Oops!?

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry failed to submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the Virginia primary ballot, state GOP officials said Friday evening.

Perry?s campaign told state election officials it had submitted 11,911 signatures, but a Virginia Republican familiar with the situation said that the Texas governor did not submit the required 10,000.

***

They have not examined Gingrich?s signatures yet, but expected to do so by late Friday night.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. to collect 10,000 signatures from across the state, including 400 from each congressional district.

Things may not be looking much better for Newt, who submitted only 11,050?signatures.? Bachmann, Huntsman, and Santorum failed to submit any signatures, potentially leaving this as a Mitt Romney vs Ron Paul matchup.? Do we all get to point and laugh at those who claim organization doesn?t matter any more?? The practical effect, as GOP fundraiser/consultant Nathan Wurtzel notes, is that the Virginia primary will drop in relevance relative to other contests that day, which will not help GOP efforts to win this swing?state in the general election.

Update: The issues in qualifying for the Virginia ballot are well-known.? Via Philip Klein?s Twitter feed, Stacy Cline notes that in 2007, ?the Giuliani campaign had a full-time lawyer devoted almost entirely to qualifying for the VA ballot? and Team Rudy spent an entire weekend checking to make sute they had enough signatures from each district.? Virginia GOP officials tell John McCormack there is not a write-in line on the ballot.? Klein will be shocked if Newt qualifies.

Update 2: Looks like Newt?s in, making Perry look even worse.

Update 3: Patterico commenter SarahW tweets that she got a robocall to come down and sign a petition? on the day before the robocall. Oops.

Update 4:? Newt Gingrich has also been DQed from the VA primary.? He promises an aggressive write-in campaign.? It may also be futile, if John McCormack?s source was correct ? and, given the circumstances, we might credit some anonymous state party official over Gingrich until definitively proven otherwise.

Update 5: Yep, looks like there?s no write-in for Virginia primaries.?IIRC, the GOP has minimal control over the state legislature? could they amend the law to allow write-ins?? I do not even know if the legislature is in session, but I would think there could be discussion, as?it would benefit the state and?national party to have a more competitive primary. (I presume the fear is that in a year like this, Dems could flood the GOP primary for Obama.)

Stocks close higher; S&P turns positive for 2011 (AP)

Stocks closed higher Friday after a quiet, pre-holiday session that turned the S&P 500 index positive for the year.

Traders were relieved by news that Congress extended a payroll tax holiday for workers and emergency unemployment benefits. Both programs were set to expire at the end of the year. Letting that happen would have reduced economic growth by about 1 percent, analysts said.

The final business day before Christmas also was the slowest full day of trading so far this year. Traders exchanged just 2.22 billion shares, about half of the recent average. The market will be closed on Monday because Christmas falls on a Sunday this year.

Stocks have risen steadily since Tuesday on hopeful signs about the pace of economic growth in the fourth quarter, which ends next week. New claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level since April 2008, long before anyone realized the nation was in a recession.

A series of mixed economic reports Friday did little to derail that optimism. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 11.33 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,265.33. It started the year at 1,257.64.

Stocks might surge into the new year if the S&P 500 passes a couple of key technical thresholds, said Todd Salamone, research director at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

Fund managers currently hold relatively few stocks, Salamone noted, and many of their funds have underperformed the market and are negative for the year. If the index rises farther above its break-even point for the year or its average over the past several months, fund managers might flood into the market in a last-ditch attempt to improve their annual returns, he said.

"The worst thing that can happen for a fund manager is to underperform and be in the red when your benchmark, the S&P index, is in the green" for the year, Salamone said.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 124.35 points, or 1 percent, to 12,294. Bank of America Corp. was the Dow's biggest gainer, adding 2.4 percent. All but two of the 30 Dow stocks rose, Alcoa Inc. and Boeing Co.

The Dow has risen 527.74 points, or 4.5 percent in the past four days. It was the first four-day winning streak for the Dow since mid-September.

The Nasdaq composite index gained 19.19 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,618.64.

Earlier Friday, the government said that consumer spending and incomes barely grew in November. The weak gains suggest that consumers may have trouble sustaining their spending into 2012.

In another worrying sign, a measure of business investment decreased for the second straight month. Business investment has been a pocket of strong demand and spending amid a sluggish recovery. A tax break that encouraged companies to invest in new equipment and facilities expires at the end of the year.

Yet hopes for the economy remained high after this week's encouraging news about the job market and strong holiday sales for retailers.

Among the companies making big moves:

? Rambus Inc. jumped 12.2 percent after the technology licensing company said it reached a patent license deal with Broadcom Corp. and settled a lawsuit with the chip maker.

? TripAdvisor Inc. rose 6.1 percent, the most in the S&P 500, as traders reassessed the value of the newly-spun off travel review website. The stock had fallen sharply since it officially started trading on Wednesday. It recovered some losses on Friday as analysts weighed its rapidly growing revenue and market share.

? Eastman Kodak Co. rose 9.5 percent after the struggling photography company said its general counsel, Laura Quatela, would become co-president on Jan. 1.

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) ? A Marine who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor has returned to the USS Arizona ? divers placed the urn holding Frank Cabiness' cremated remains inside the battleship sunk by the Japanese 70 years ago.

"He said it was because that's where he belonged," the late Marine's son, Jerry Cabiness, said after Friday's solemn ceremony. "He lost all of his friends there and he wanted to be with them."

The divers swam over to the sunken battleship and placed the container inside.

Hawaii-based Marines from the 3rd Marine Regiment performed a rifle salute and taps Friday, some nine years after Cabiness died in Lewisville, Texas, at the age of 86.

Jerry Cabiness said his father always wanted to return to his ship, but his family took some time to fulfill that wish because of some financial problems and the expense of traveling to Hawaii.

"But we finally got it done. And it was a beautiful ceremony. The Marines did him proud," he said.

Dozens of Arizona crew members who lived through the Dec. 7, 1941, attack have chosen to have their ashes interred on the battleship after death. Many do it out of a desire to join those they left behind.

Survivors who served on the USS Utah ? the only other ship sunk in the attack that still sits in the harbor ? have done the same.

Servicemen who served on other ships and on land may have their ashes scattered in the harbor if they choose. Most of the dozen U.S. ships that sank or were beached 70 years ago were repaired and returned to service.

Altogether, 2,390 Americans were killed in the attack that brought the United States into World War II.

The Arizona lost 1,177 sailors and Marines ? more than any ship or unit. Most of those who died are still entombed on the vessel, which rests next to Ford Island where it sank nine minutes after being hit by a Japanese aerial bomb.

Cabiness, who was a private first class when Japanese planes bombed the Arizona on Dec. 7, 1941, was among the 337 crew members who survived.

Jerry Cabiness said his father was at his battle station in the main mast of the ship when the ship was hit. He narrowly avoided getting hit by machine gun fire, and luckily his only injury was from friction burns suffered when he slid down a ladder while rushing to abandon ship.

He said his father jumped into the water and wasn't blown from the deck, which had been reported earlier from a Marine news release.

The family proudly retains the only thing he managed to leave the ship with: a watch that stopped at 8:15, the moment that Sunday morning when he hit the water after jumping from the Arizona.

After the war, he worked for an oil pipeline company in Texas that later became Amoco Pipeline. He measured and documented oil that traveled through a pipeline to a refinery. He never missed a day of work in 30 years, Jerry Cabiness said.

He didn't mention the attack much.

"It was just too hard for him. He just couldn't do it," his son said.

The Cabinesses moved around a lot, but lived the longest in Levelland, Texas.

Today, Jerry Cabiness and his family live in Maumelle, Ark., a suburb of Little Rock.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Newt Gingrich tried to quiet unrelenting campaign criticism that he acknowledged had taken a toll as Mitt Romney stepped up insider attacks Saturday in hopes of regaining front-runner status with the first presidential vote little more than two weeks away.

Gingrich, the former House speaker enjoying a late surge in the polls, pledged to correct what he said were his rivals' inaccurate claims about him. Romney, the ex-Massachusetts governor looking for a rebound, portrayed Gingrich as a well-heeled lobbyist since his service in Congress and predicted that conservative voters will reject Gingrich as they learn more about his lengthy Washington record.

"I'm going to let the lawyers decide what is and what is not lobbying, but when it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, typically it's a duck," Romney said.

With the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3 up for grabs, most candidates are redoubling their efforts heading into the holidays, when voters generally tune out the race.

Gingrich is their prime target. Last week alone, anti-Gingrich ads from a Romney ally outspent Gingrich by an 8-to-1 margin on television.

Gingrich cited "the extraordinary negativity of the campaign" during a call from Washington with Iowa supporters. He said he was inclined to hold teleconferences every few days so people can discuss ideas and his campaign can "encourage them to raise any of these things that you get in the mail that are junk and dishonest."

"I'll be glad to personally answer, so you're hearing it from my very own lips," he said in the forum. "We don't have our advertising versus their advertising, but you get to ask me directly."

Romney campaigned in early-voting South Carolina, where tea party activists have given Gingrich a strong lead in polls. Romney told reporters that many voters now are just beginning to pay attention to the race and will turn on Gingrich after they learn about his time in Washington and his role with mortgage company Freddie Mac, a quasi-government agency.

Gingrich's consulting firm collected $1.6 million from the company. Gingrich insists he did not lobby for them and only provided advice.

"I think as tea partyers concentrate on that, for instance, they'll say, 'Wow, this really isn't the guy that would represent our views,'" Romney said after a town hall meeting with South Carolina Rep. Tim Scott. "Many tea party folks, I believe, are going to find me to be the ideal candidate."

Gingrich said the attacks on his record have been brutal, but he insisted they are exaggerated.

"I just want to set the record straight," Gingrich told his Iowa backers. "We were paid annually for six years, so the numbers you see are six years of work. Most of that money went to pay overhead ? for staff, for other things. It didn't go directly to me. It went to the company that provided consulting advice."

It's a distinction without a difference, his rivals have said. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann continued to criticize his tenure as a consultant and Texas Rep. Ron Paul continued an ad accusing him of "serial hypocrisy" for taking Freddie Mac's checks.

During a Friday appearance on Jay Leno's late-night television show, Paul also turned on Bachmann.

"She doesn't like Muslim. She hates them," said Paul, who routinely clashes with his rivals over foreign policy. "She wants to go get them."

Bachmann told reporters in Estherville that was not true.

"I don't hate Muslims. I love the American people," she said. "As president of the United States, my goal will be to keep America safe, free and sovereign."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry rumbled through rural Iowa on a bus tour. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum stuck to a plan that has won him the honor of spending the most time in the state, yet has not yet translated into support in polls.

Iowa's largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register, announced its endorsement of Romney on its website Saturday evening. It was as much an endorsement of Romney as it was an indictment of his competitors.

"While other candidates have pandered to extremes with attacks on the courts and sermons on Christian values, Romney has pointedly refrained from reckless rhetoric and moralizing," the newspaper wrote.

The paper does not have a track record of predicting winners in Iowa. In 2008, the paper backed Republican Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Four years earlier, it backed Sen. John Edwards' unsuccessful bid and in 2000 editors backed McCain and Democratic Sen. Bill Bradley. All came up short.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who early on decided against competing in Iowa, was campaigning in New Hampshire. Huntsman, who also served as President Barack Obama's ambassador to China, has kept his focus on New Hampshire, where independent voters are the largest bloc and can vote in either party's primary.

As the Iowa vote neared, Gingrich's decision to take the weekend off from campaigning raised eyebrows given his rivals' busy schedules. Gingrich called the decision "pacing."

Gingrich has prided himself on a nontraditional campaign, but his advantages in the polls could shift if the only exposure to Gingrich comes through rivals' negative ads.

Gingrich's campaign manager noted the onslaught in a fundraising pitch to donors.

"With Newt's opponents spending $9 million on attack ads in Iowa, we need to quickly ramp up our messaging," Michael Krull said Saturday.

Anti-Gingrich ads, courtesy of Romney allies, dominate in Iowa. The Restore Our Future political action committee on Friday spent an additional $1 million on airtime, and broadcast almost $790,000 in commercials against Gingrich last week alone. Gingrich, by comparison, spent roughly 100,000 on broadcast and cable ads.

That looked to continue into the final week before the Christmas holiday.

Romney, who has kept Iowa at arm's length after investing heavily here four years ago only to come up short. His advisers note they have kept in touch with supporters of his 2008 campaign that came in second place in Iowa.

Howard Stern pledges to stir up "America's Got Talent" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Controversial radio host Howard Stern, who was named on Thursday as a new judge on family TV show "America's Got Talent", said he would give honest opinions and warned "feelings are going to be hurt."

Stern, 57, will replace departing talk show host Piers Morgan on the panel when the talent show returns for a 7th season in the summer of 2012, broadcaster NBC said.

The shock jock, known for his sexually explicit interviews and foul language, will continue to host his daily radio program for SiriusXM and production of the television show will move to New York to accommodate Stern's radio schedule.

The naming of Stern drew sharp criticism from some groups and fans of the show. It was deemed "an act of desperation for a flailing network," by the Parents Television Council.

PTC president Tim Winter called Stern "a performer who is synonymous with shock, profanity and obscenity" who was not suitable for a prime-time network TV show watched by families.

Winter said NBC, which has languished for several years at the bottom of the four main U.S. TV networks, "risks losing millions in advertising dollars", suggesting the PTC would urge its members to pressure advertisers to pull their commercials.

A writer named slawson on People magazine's comment board posted: "AGT use to be my absolute favorite show. With Stern (YUCK!!!), I know I will no longer watch it. Wow...What was the network thinking. Taking a clean, fun, innocent show to have a "wannabe" porn king judging. Wow, just wow, seriously."

However, NBC reality programming chief Paul Telegdy said Stern's "larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to 'America's Got Talent'."

Stern, whose raunchy humor and comments on religion and race have often landed him in hot water, will join judges Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel on the show which features performers ranging in age from children to seniors.

He told his radio listeners on Thursday that he would pull no punches with the young contestants, and their mothers.

"I am going to tell you your kiddie has no talent...this nonsense of Howie and Sharon putting through less than talented people has got to stop. Under my administration, there will be no Frank Sinatra impersonators winning," he said.

"I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but feelings are going to be hurt," Stern added.

"America's Got Talent," created by British entrepreneur Simon Cowell, is one of NBC's most successful shows and the outspoken Stern had been Cowell's top choice to join the judging panel.

The radio show host lobbied hard but unsuccessfully last year for a judge's spot on "American Idol".

Stern's new salary was not revealed but Forbes.com writer Jeff Bercovici estimated that he could get about $15 million and that NBC could spend some $10 million to move the show to New York.

Stern said that he was not joining "America's Got Talent" for the money. "I didn't do it for the money. I did it because I like the show and I need to be a judge. That's it," he said.

'Rudy' inspiration charged with securities fraud

By msnbc.com news services

Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who gained fame as the underdog football player at the University of Notre Dame and inspired the 1993 movie?"Rudy," was sued Friday?by the Securities and Exchange Commission.?

Ruettiger?and 12 others were charged with running a scheme to deceive investors into buying stock in Ruettiger's sports drink company.

The SEC lawsuit?called it "a classic pump-and-dump scheme involving a penny stock called Rudy Nutrition" that occured between February and September 2008 and?generated more than $11 million in illicit profits.

"Investors were lured into the scheme by Mr. Ruettiger's well-known, feel-good story but found themselves in a situation that did not have a happy ending," SEC enforcement lawyer Scott Friestad said in a statement.

The company, which is no longer in business, provided false and misleading statements about the company to investors, the?SEC said.

Ruettiger and 10 of the scheme's other participants have agreed to settle the SEC's charges without admitting or denying the allegations. Ruettiger agreed to pay $382,866 to settle the case.

In a review of the movie, The New York Times said the lead actor?"doesn't soft-pedal his character's annoying obstinacy. He is not afraid of making Rudy a royal pain."

A roundup of 2011 global dairy research highlights the benefits of dairy products

Rosemont, IL -- As the New Year approaches, resolutions of losing weight and getting healthier are stacking up all over the world. However, with so many different fad diets, experts, websites and TV shows all touting different (and sometimes miraculous!) methods of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, accomplishing your resolution can get quite confusing.

"These past few decades we've seen a dietary shift," said Donald Moore, Executive Director, Global Dairy Platform. "Consumers are too focused on what not to eat, instead of what to eat. Unfortunately, a popular diet taboo is to consume a product that has less of something like salt or fat, versus a product, such as milk, which is loaded with essential nutrients naturally designed to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle and potentially lose weight."

In 2011 alone, there has been an abundance of published research from world renowned nutritional scientists and universities, revealing the health benefits of dairy. To name a few:

  • According to a U.S. study published in February's Current Nutrition and Food Science, milk provides necessary nutrients without adversely impacting body weight in children and adolescents.
  • In Australia, researchers found that consumption of low-fat dairy may help decrease the risk for elevated blood pressure and, regardless of fat content, fluid dairy foods are associated with a reduced risk of elevated blood pressure.
  • A French study found a lower incidence of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and abnormal levels of fasting blood glucose was associated with higher consumption of dairy products and calcium.
  • Researchers in Sweden studied more than 15,000 women and found that high-fat diets (including yogurt and regular milk), are associated with a reduced risk of invasive breast cancer.
  • Researchers in Australia found that dairy food consumption are not associated with weight gain in children and adults. The review was published in the July Obesity Reviews.
  • In Canada, researchers found that women who consumed at least two servings of dairy per day had smaller visceral fat cells compared with women consuming less than two daily servings.
  • A May study revealed that dairy intake was not associated with increased heart attack risk in more than 3,000 Costa Rican adults.
  • A study of premenopausal African-American women revealed that consuming low-fat and fat-free dairy products may be associated with a lower percent of body fat.
  • A Swedish study found that a higher intake of dairy products is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • In Japan, a breakfast that included milk protein was shown to reduce visceral fat by approximately 15%, versus a breakfast that included soy protein that showed no change in fat.
  • In October, a Danish study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that cheese does not seem to increase plasma total and LDL-cholesterol concentrations.

"For generations, the consumption of dairy has been a backbone of communities. Not only does it deliver nutrition to people at all stages of life, but dairy farming helps promote social, economic and environmental prosperity," said Moore.

Japan Says Stricken Nuclear Power Plant in Cold Shutdown

News | Energy & Sustainability

Critics question the announcement, but a cold shutdown is when water used to cool nuclear fuel rods remains below boiling point, preventing the fuel from reheating

Image: Tepco

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan declared its tsunami-stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant to be in cold shutdown on Friday, taking a major step to resolving the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years but some critics questioned whether the plant was really under control.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant, 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo, was wrecked on March 11 by a huge earthquake and a towering tsunami which knocked out its cooling systems, triggering meltdowns, radiation leaks and mass evacuations.

In making the much-anticipated announcement, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda tried to draw a line under the most acute phase of the crisis and highlighted the next challenges: the clean-up and the safe dismantling of the plant, something the government says may take more than 30 years.

"The reactors have reached a state of cold shutdown," Noda told a government nuclear emergency response meeting.

"A stable condition has been achieved," he added, noting radiation levels at the boundary of the plant could now be kept at low levels, even in the event of "unforeseeable incidents."

A cold shutdown is when water used to cool nuclear fuel rods remains below boiling point, preventing the fuel from reheating. One of the chief aims of the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), had been to bring the reactors to that state by the year-end.

The declaration of a cold shutdown could have repercussions well beyond the plant. It is a government pre-condition for allowing about 80,000 residents evacuated from within a 20 km (12 mile) radius of the plant to go home.

Both Noda and his environment and nuclear crisis minister Goshi Hosono said that while the government still faced huge challenges, the situation at the plant was under control.

That provoked an angry response from senior local officials, Greenpeace and some reporters even as the Vienna-based U.N. nuclear agency welcomed "significant progress" at the plant.

"We hope that this will be a fresh step towards going back home but it does not change the fact that the path to bringing the crisis under control is long and tough," Fukushima governor Yuhei Sato said, according to the Asahi newspaper website.

Greenpeace dismissed the announcement as a publicity stunt.

"By triumphantly declaring a cold shutdown, the Japanese authorities are clearly anxious to give the impression that the crisis has come to an end, which is clearly not the case," Greenpeace Japan said in a statement.

Hosono acknowledged that there were some areas where it would be difficult to bring people back and said there could be small difficulties here and there, but he told a briefing: "I believe there will be absolutely no situation in which problems escalate and nearby residents are forced to evacuate."

The water temperature in all three of the affected reactors fell below boiling point by September, but Tepco had said it would declare a state of cold shutdown only once it was satisfied that the temperatures and the amount of radiation emitted from the plant remained stable.

Jonathan Cobb, an expert at the British-based World Nuclear Association, said the authorities had been conservative in choosing the timing of the announcement.

"The government has delayed declaration of cold shutdown conditions, one reason being to ensure that the situation at the plant was stable," Cobb said, adding that the evacuation zone should get progressively smaller as more of it was decontaminated.

Kazuhiko Kudo, professor of nuclear engineering at Kyushu University, said authorities needed to determine exactly the status of melted fuel inside the reactors and stabilize a makeshift cooling system, which handles the tens of thousands of tons of contaminated water accumulated on-site.

Reprogramming brain cells important first step for new Parkinson's therapy

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

In efforts to find new treatments for Parkinson's Disease (PD), researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have directly reprogrammed astrocytes, the most plentiful cell type in the central nervous system, into dopamine-producing neurons. PD is marked by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain. Dopamine is a brain chemical important in behavior and cognition, voluntary movement, sleep, mood, attention, and memory and learning.

"These cells are potentially useful in cell-replacement therapies for Parkinson's or in modeling the disease in the lab," says senior author John Gearhart, PhD, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IRM) at Penn. The team reports their findings in PLoS One.

"Our study is the first to demonstrate conversion of astrocytes to midbrain dopaminergic neurons, opening the door for novel reprogramming strategies to treat Parkinson's disease," says first author Russell C. Addis, PhD, a senior research investigator with IRM.

A Different Approach

Parkinson's affects different areas of the brain but primarily attacks the dopamine-producing section called the substantial nigra. Cells in this region send dopamine to another region called the striatum, where it is used to regulate movement. The chemical or genetic triggers that kill dopamine neurons over time is at the heart of understanding the progressive loss of these specialized cells.

As many as one million people in the US live with PD, according to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Symptoms include tremors, slowness of movements, limb stiffness, and difficulties with gait and balance.

Limited success in clinical trials over the last 15 years in transplanting fetal stem cells into the brains of Parkinson's disease patients has spurred researchers to look for new treatments. Using PET scans, investigators have been able to see that transplanted neurons grow and make connections, reducing symptoms for a time. Ethical issues about the source of embryonic stem cells; the interaction of cells with host cells; the efficiency of stems cells to reproduce, and their long-term viability and stability are all still concerns about trials using dopaminergic cell transplants to treat Parkinson's.

First Steps

In the first step towards a direct cell replacement therapy for Parkinson's, the team reprogrammed astrocytes to dopaminergic neurons using three transcription factors ? ASCL1, LMX1B, and NURR1 ? delivered with a lentiviral vector.

The process is efficient, with about 18 percent of cells expressing markers of dopaminergic neurons after two weeks. The next closest conversion efficiency is approximately 9 percent, which was reported in another study.

The dopamine-producing neurons derived from astrocytes showed gene expression patterns and electrophysiolgical properties of midbrain dopaminergic neurons, and released dopamine when their cell membranes were depolarized.

The Penn team is now working to see if the same reprogramming process that converts astrocytes to dopamine-producing neurons in a dish can also work within a living brain ? experiments will soon be underway using gene therapy vectors to deliver the reprogramming factors directly to astrocytes in a monkey model of PD.

How Can I Post to Facebook, Twitter, and/or Google+ All at the Same Time? [Ask Lifehacker]

How Can I Post to Facebook, Twitter, and/or Google+ All at the Same Time?Dear Lifehacker,
I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with all these social networks, and I really don't feel like posting manually to each one every time. I know there are a lot of apps for updating Facebook, Twitter and Google+ at the same time, but which ones are the best?

Sincerely,
Social Stress

Image remixed from an original by Emin Ozkan/Shutterstock.

Dear Stress,

You aren't kidding. There are a lot of apps out there that sync Facebook with Twitter, or Google+ with Twitter and Facebook, but it seems like we gain one and lose three every couple of weeks. Right now, there are a few services we definitely think are a cut above the rest, though, so here are your options.

If you're only a Twitter and Facebook user, you have a few apps to choose from. Obviously, the official Twitter app for Facebook is always a good choice. It stays updated since it's made by Twitter, but be forewarned it will send every tweet you make to Facebook (excluding replies). That means if you tweet a lot, you could really annoy your Facebook friends.

How Can I Post to Facebook, Twitter, and/or Google+ All at the Same Time?If you'd rather pick and choose which tweets you send to Facebook, I highly recommend TweetDeck. It's our favorite Twitter client for Windows, and it's available on OS X and mobile platforms as well. Even if you've tried it in the past, the new, non-AIR version is pretty great, so I recommend giving it another shot. It will let you choose which networks you want to post any given status too?Twitter, Facebook, or both. Alternatively, the Selective Tweets app for Facebook can get the job done without a separate app. Just append the #fb hashtag to any tweet you want sent to Facebook, and it'll show up on your Facebook profile as well (without the #fb hashtag). Since this is connected to your Facebook account, it also works for anything you tweet from your phone, which is nice.

How Can I Post to Facebook, Twitter, and/or Google+ All at the Same Time? The only problem with the above services is that they won't post links or photos on Facebook as proper Facebook links. That is, they won't give them a thumbnail or anything?it'll just show the short link as you'd see it on Twitter. If you really want links and photos to be shared properly, you can use the awesome ifttt service. You can tell it to send any tweet containing a link to Facebook as a proper link, though if you also have it sending regular tweets, it will double up on any link posts, which can be annoying. Ifttt is great for when you only want to share certain kinds of posts?like links or tweets you've favorited?to Facebook.

Share to Twitter, Facebook, and Google+

How Can I Post to Facebook, Twitter, and/or Google+ All at the Same Time?By far the best way to share statuses between networks is the +Rob Mcgee Google+ account. Just connect your Facebook or Twitter accounts to the +Rob McGee bot using these instructions. It'll only take you a few minutes, and when you're done, anything you post to Google+ will show up on Twitter and/or Facebook, depending on which accounts you attached to the bot. It will also share links as proper links on Facebook, which is great.

How Can I Post to Facebook, Twitter, and/or Google+ All at the Same Time? The only downsides to this method are that you have to have a Google+ account and that it doesn't send photos to Facebook. If you post a photo on Google+ with a comment, it'll only post that comment as your Facebook status (which sometimes might not make sense). Overall, though, if you have a Google+ account, this is the best method for sending statuses to any network, since it's easy to do, shares links properly, lets you choose which statuses you send, and (like the others) it works on mobile devices, too.

These aren't the only services out there, but they are definitely the best we've found. You have a lot of browser extensions you could use, too, but none seem to be better than the above services, and they require you to use a certain browser (not to mention they won't work from your phone). Hopefully this helps you find a service that's right for you.

Sincerely,
Lifehacker

P.S. Do you have a favorite that we missed? Let us know about it in the comments.

Pervasive insecurity in Mexico: If this isn't 'terror,' what is? (The Christian Science Monitor)

Boston ? Across the country bombs packed with unsophisticated explosives have gone off, killing bystanders and targets alike; gory videos documenting the torture and beheadings of countless people are disseminated on the Internet; dismembered bodies are disposed of in public spaces with threatening messages penned as warnings to others.

This may sound like a description of Afghanistan, a stronghold for targets of the US "war on terror." But in fact, it's Mexico. And despite the similarities in the tactics of violence and intimidation used, in Afghanistan it's called terrorism; in Mexico it's not.

There's no dispute that the violence ? which has claimed more than 40,000 lives since 2007 ? is escalating. Yet there is no consensus about what to label the troubling state of affairs. It's variously called a criminal insurgency, narcoterrorism, simply war, and ? less frequently ? terrorism. Mexicans, in everyday language, call it la inseguridad (insecurity).

But does it matter what it's called?

PHOTO GALLERY: Life under military protection in Veracruz, Mexico

Politically and legally it does.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2010 warned that Mexican drug trafficking organizations may be morphing into "what we would consider an insurgency." She was instantly criticized by both Mexicans and Americans, and President Obama stepped in to issue an apology. (An insurgency, in security parlance, is often thought of as a step beyond terrorism, more of a mass movement of violence and crime.)

But Mexican President Felipe Calder?n used the "terror" label in response to the casino attack in Monterrey that killed 52 people in August: He tweeted it, his spokesman repeated it, and then in a televised speech, he said it again. It was the first such official use of the term, and there was no domestic political backlash.

Going beyond rhetoric, US Rep. Michael McCaul (R) of Texas proposed legislation earlier this year that would label six Mexican drug cartels foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs). "Calder?n said it's an attempt to replace the state," says Mr. McCaul, "and he's right." He says the cartels fall under the US federal statute of terrorism.

But what's happening in Mexico doesn't meet the definition of terrorism, says Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism expert at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. "Scholars agree, terrorism has to be political: a fundamental political change sought through violence," says Professor Hoffman.

Many argue that the cartels' political aspiration is to create a negative space without police or government oversight, but Hoffman says that's no different from the "Godfather" movies.

"The violence in Mexico is about lining the pockets" of cartel members, not creating a new political order, he says.

Legally, that distinction is important.

"Mislabeling terrorism makes for bad laws and bad policies," says Hoffman. "You get into problems when you conflate two forms of violence."

If McCaul's legislation succeeds, more than simply slapping the label of terrorism on the cartels, the FTO status would provide the United States with more legal options in combating the violence seen exploding along the US-Mexican border.

For many, like McCaul, the definition of terrorism isn't necessarily the focus of an argument for why Mexico is or is not witnessing terrorism. The emphasis centers on what will happen once the term is applied.

There are obvious economic impacts associated with the terror label ? such as driving tourists away ? but more specific dangers exist, say experts.

Human rights activist Florencia Ruiz Mendoza says Mexican cartels are not terrorists, despite their tactics. "The conversation about terrorism is distracting from the more important issues," says Ms. Mendoza. She says the term would be convenient for both governments in increasing funding to combat cartel violence, but would hurt average Mexican citizens. "If the cartels are terrorists, that allows the Mexican government to fight back. They might release more troops throughout the country and set up more military checkpoints," Mendoza says. (Part of Mr. Calder?n's strategy has been to deploy military troops to locations of high violence.)

This approach worries Mendoza because the government's lack of control over the cartel violence "allows the government to repress a lot of rights," Mendoza says. She has received complaints of military violence against citizens uninvolved with cartel activity.

This more personal approach to defining and labeling terrorism doesn't surprise Hoffman. He says terrorism has always been a reflection of societal values. "The term 'terrorism' originated during the French Revolution as a positive label," Hoffman says. Later it referred to state violence, and since 9/11 "the term has been used much more promiscuously," often focusing on emotion more than the pursuit of a political end.

"We label everything we don't like or that scares us as 'terrorism,' " Hoffman says. "[Cartels in Mexico] are certainly generating fear, and people are being terrorized, and it's acceptable to say that. But terrorism aims to fundamentally change a political system or re-create a political order."

The violence in Mexico has political elements, he says, but ultimately it's about economics.
